Astra Museum - Sibiu - Spring 2009

I can not get enough of visiting this marvelous museum - ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization. My first visit was in the winter when I was very surprised of the things present there. I was thinking back then that I should definitely come back for more and I did indeed.

It is not easy to express in words the beauty of the landscape on those Astra lands in the middle of the spring - the green can never be more expressive - it just surrounds you from everywhere, even when you are by the lake or in the middle of the forest. At some point I felt completely overwhelmed by nature’s grandeur. Visiting the same places that I’ve seen in the winter was very enjoyable since more new things were being discovered at every step of the way.

The atmosphere in the museum is quite rustic - and this is the whole idea - to look and feel exactly like in the regions the houses came from, to sense what traditional really means. I found out by analyzing the exposition that life in the traditional way could be simple and meaningful in the same time - every activity our ancestors had to do was cleverly and meticulously executed using only some rudimentary nature elements: water, wood, wind. I can imagine the union with the nature was greater then ever back then - nature was a part of the household, giving a hand in the activities or sometimes pushing the limits to the maximum.

So, even if you’ve already been to the Astra Museum before, you have no reason to miss the re-birth of nature in the middle of traditional Romanian houses and workshops. You’d definitely enjoy it, as I did.
